Summer music, theatre camps abound at Wayne State’s College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts

Wayne State University is calling all junior Creative Warriors interested in honing their crafts this summer in music and theatre.

The College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts is elated to offer its summer piano camp, J.C. Heard Jazz Week @ Wayne, Broadway Boot Camp and Audition Intensive camps for K-12 students.

SUMMER PIANO CAMP

The Wayne State University Department of Music is excited to present its annual one-week Summer Piano Camp, focused on improving students' music interpretation and technical skills while fostering an appreciation for collaboration and performance.

Each student will build on their musical abilities through individual lessons, masterclasses, and various performance opportunities throughout the week. Summer Piano Camp is for intermediate and advanced piano students, age 11 and up.

Dates: June 16-20 (with no class on June 19 holiday)

J.C. HEARD JAZZ WEEK @ WAYNE

Local high school jazz musicians who pass an initial audition will be asked to participate in Wayne State University’s annual J.C. Heard Jazz Week @ Wayne. This free, one-week on-campus jazz intensive is led by WSU music faculty, Detroit Jazz Festival guest artists, and community musicians. Faculty/staff jam sessions in the community and the J.C. Heard Jazz Week @ Wayne All-Stars band will also perform at the Detroit Jazz Festival.

Since 2007, Wayne State’s Department of Music and the Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation have partnered to provide an unforgettable jazz education experience. Renamed in 2012 to honor legendary drummer J.C. Heard, this program continues to celebrate his legacy through masterclasses, student combos, and hands-on improv workshops.

Dates: July 21-25

Audition dates: May 31 and June 28 in Room 2414, Old Main, Wayne State's campus (schedule midday appointments with Chuck Newsome)


Warriors Onstage Workshops


BROADWAY BOOT CAMP

Warriors Onstage Workshops (WOW) Broadway Boot Camps will engage grades K- 7 (ages 6 and up) in hands-on activities that will help them see how theatrical performance and visual arts connect.

Attendees will work on and experience:

  • Scene and movement exercises
  • Theatre games and traditional activities
  • Trips to the Detroit Institute of Arts and Michigan Science Center

Dates: June 23-27 and Aug. 4-8

Cost: $300 per session

AUDITION INTENSIVE

WOW Audition Intensive Workshops will help camp goers in grades 8-12 prepare for school play auditions and/or college program admission.

Attendees will work on:

  • Improving stage voice
  • Refining stage presence
  • Bringing character(s) to life

Dates: July 14-18 and July 28-Aug. 1
