A Panel Discussion in Association with the Exhibition Forbidden Art

From stolen antiquities to the Elgin Marbles to Nazi-looted art, returning plunder to its rightful owner is not as straightforward as it may seem, since who the "rightful" owner is often depends on your point of view. Although there are numerous professional and ethical codes for the return of stolen, looted, or confiscated art, contested cultural property continues to be a highly controversial topic for museums and international law today.

Three speakers from three different disciplinary perspectives will make brief presentations on this topic before opening discussion to the audience.

Dora Apel, associate professor of art history at Wayne State University, specializes in modern and contemporary art, photography and visual culture

Graham Beal, director, president, and CEO of the Detroit Institute of Arts

Guy Stern, Director of the Harry and Wanda Zekelman International Institute of the Righteous at the Holocaust Memorial Center in Farmington Hills
