The Free Speech Century: One Hundred Years of the First Amendment

A Presidential Sesquicentennial Symposium

Wayne State University will host the Presidentail Symposium The Free Speech Century: One Hundred Years of the First Amendment, on Thursday, October 25, 2018. The symposium will examine the practical and idealistic ways scholars have tried to ensure the broadest possible campus conversations, particularly in times of social unrest and divisions where these conversations are more important and more difficult.

Keynote speaker Dr. Lee C. Bollinger, a First Amendment scholar who has spent more than 20 years as an administrator at the University of Michigan and at Columbia University, will offer his perspective of what it's like to guide a campus-wide conversation that focuses on different topics over the decades and has situated itself within an urban culture. This symposium is a collaboration between Wayne State University faculty from Philosophy, the Humanities Center, and the School of Law, and one of six symposia developed in honor of the university's sesquicentennial. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. and the program begins at 9 a.m. in the Student Center Ballroom.
