MetroArts Detroit - Season Six Begins Airing on Detroit Public Television, June 2

The sixth season of MetroArts Detroit, produced at Wayne State University, will begin airing on Detroit Public Television, WTVS TV, Channel 56, Fridays at 5:30 p.m., starting on June 2, 2017.

The new season of MetroArts Detroit includes 14 shows produced with Wayne State student crew members at the 5057 Midtown Studio. The Midtown Studio is a cooperative venture between Wayne State University's College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts' Department of Communication and Detroit Public TV.

MetroArts features artists from the Metropolitan Detroit area who represent the disciplines of visual, performing and communication arts. Season six kicks off with singer-songwriters from Sound Lab and explore the work of Kresge award-winning photographer Bruce Giffin and sculptor Robert Bielat. Musical guests in later shows include funk-soul band The Infatuations and Nadir Omowale, singer-songwriters Sharon Tse, Charity Ward, and John Finan, along with rockers Carolyn Striho and her band, Virginia Violet and the Rays, Dirt Wolf, Raven Love and the 27s, and the Dale Grisa Jazz Quintet. We will also feature the R & B Trio D-M-K, rap/hip-hop artist Pariis Noel, and the bluegrass-metal band The Native Howl. This season will celebrate 20 year anniversaries of Sphinx and Ballet Renaissance, along with performances from L-S-O Dance, ArtLab J, and the SYNCZ hip hop dance crew. Highlights from fashion shows with designers Diane Berry, Emily Walker, and Hair Wars stylists and additional guests include fine artists, theatre groups, filmmakers, and a comedian.

The goal of the show is to bring awareness to up-and-coming artists as well as support those artists who have worked their entire lives in the Metro Detroit area by acting as advocates and taking active roles in their communities. Each show is comprised of three segments, with guests who talk about their current work and their future endeavors. Depending on the discipline, the artists either perform or showcase their creative works during their segments. This season's host is Wayne State student Larry Wallace. The producers are Kim Piper-Aiken and Gary Cendrowski.

Established in 1986, Wayne State's College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts serves more than 2,500 students majoring in 17 undergraduate and 10 graduate programs through the Department of Communication, Department of Music, James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History and the Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance.
