MetroArts Detroit - Season 8 Begins Airing on Detroit Public Television, August 2
The eighth season of MetroArts Detroit, produced at Wayne State University, will begin airing on Detroit Public Television, WTVS TV, Channel 56, Fridays at 5:30 p.m., starting on August 2, 2019.
The new season of MetroArts Detroit includes 14 shows produced with Wayne State student crew members at the 5057 Midtown Studio. The Midtown Studio is a cooperative venture between Wayne State University's College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts' Department of Communication and Detroit Public TV.
MetroArts features artists from the Metropolitan Detroit area who represent the disciplines of visual, performing and communication arts. The musical guest on the first show is pop singer-songwriter Siena Liggins. We'll also explore the work master artist and muralist Dr. Hubert Massey and culture creators Moses and Pretti Teej. Musical guests in later shows include the pop-rock band Rosie and the Fellas, Americana duo The Drinkard Sisters, World music from Luis Resto and Pathe Jassi, Indie bands Hala, Double Winter, Shortly, Mark Whalen and the Buttermilk Boys, Kimball, Beta Camp, along with jazz from the Allen Dennard Quartet and R & B music from Isis Damil and the duo A-Plus. We'll also see the work of award-winning fine artists including Diamond Symone, Marlo Broughton, Sixmau, artists from the Detroit Society of Women Painters and Sculptors and more. We'll tour the Michigan Opera Theatre and we'll showcase fashion, dance, film and video producers, plus comedy and theater.

The goal of the show is to bring awareness to up-and-coming artists as well as support those artists who've worked their entire lives in the Metro Detroit area by being arts advocates and taking active roles in their communities. Each show is comprised of three segments, with guests who talk about their current work and their future endeavors. Depending on the discipline, the artists either perform or showcase their creative works during their segments. This season's host is Wayne State student Asha Patel. The producers are Kim Piper-Aiken and Gary Cendrowski.
