MetroArts Detroit ninth season begins airing on Detroit Public Television July 24

DETROIT (July 1, 2020) - The ninth season of MetroArts Detroit, which is produced at Wayne State University, will begin airing on July 24, 2020, on Detroit Public Television, WTVS TV, Channel 56. The show will air on Fridays at 2:30 p.m.

MetroArts features artists from the metro Detroit area who represent the disciplines of visual, performing and communication arts. Each show is comprised of three segments, with guests who discuss their current work and future endeavors. Depending on the discipline, the artists either perform or showcase their creative works.

The new season of MetroArts Detroit includes 11 shows produced with Wayne State student crew members at the 5057 Midtown studio. The Midtown studio is a cooperative venture between Wayne State University's College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts' Department of Communication and Detroit Public TV. This season's host is Wayne State student Abriana Walton. The show is produced by Senior Lecturer and Midtown TV studio Manager Kimmerly Piper-Aiken, Ph.D., and Associate Director for Information Technology Gary Cendrowski.

The musical guest on the first show this season is experimental R&B group Cousin Mouth. We'll also explore the work of photographer Jacob Lewkow and learn about the Holistic Ballet Yoga organization. Musical guests in later shows include the indie band Who Boy, rap/hip-hop artist Phil Swish, pop singer-songwriter Ètto Valli, rock band Play the Odds, operatic singer Kisma Jordan, award-winning jazz pianist Pamela Wise and others. Throughout the season, we'll see works from the Mint Artists Guild, and feature the creations of Tony Whlgn, Trae Isaac, Scott Kuefler, Audra Olivia, Victoria Shaheen, Jeff Gaydash, DeAnn Wiley and Jim Williams. We'll also showcase dance from Bianca Revels, Motor City Irish Dance, Grupi Krenaria of Albanian Roots and the Mawtini Dabkeh Troupe. Additionally, we'll see a puppet demonstration from Carrie Morris Arts Production, along with performances from the Mosaic Youth Theatre, poetry from Càndida, fashion by Erica Hobson and more.

"The goal of the show is to bring awareness to up-and-coming artists as well as support those artists who've worked their entire lives in the metro Detroit area by being arts advocates and taking active roles in their communities," said Piper-Aiken.
