Department of Music launches virtual music studio to promote togetherness amidst extended social distancing
The directive from Gov. Gretchen Whitmer is to stay indoors, but Wayne State University's College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts faculty and students continue to find ways to express their creative talents remotely.
The Department of Music is launching the Music Studio at Wayne, a virtual opportunity for faculty and students to create and share musical content. The content, which will be offered twice a week, will include streaming department concerts, performances by faculty specialties and other creative mechanisms to engage audiences while many learn or work remotely.
"We believe that music can provide comfort and even joy in some of the most difficult times," said Norah Duncan, IV, chair. "The Department of Music is happy to launch the Music Studio at Wayne. Virtual performances - seen on the screen or heard on the radio - have provided joy and comfort to many for more than 100 years."
Assistant Professor Joo Won Park will kick off the series on Tuesday, March 31, with a live electronic music showcase on the department's Facebook page. Park will perform a few original electronic music compositions using a computer, melodica, drum machine, synthesizer and found objects.
"By sharing some performances by our students and faculty, we hope to provide viewers with some connection to our department while social distancing - and a few moments of joy," said Duncan.
