Department of Art and Art History featured in Fresh Art International podcast student edition

Fresh Art International, the travelling arts and culture media platform and podcast presenting conversations about creativity, is pleased to announce the launch of The Student Edition. The Student Edition is a new branch of the podcast, presenting a dedicated mini-series of curated conversations with students, mentors and educators in art schools, university art, design, film and architecture departments, and incubator programs at educational and cultural institutions.

"Our goal is to capture the diverse perspectives of those who are creating the future of art and culture," says Cathy Byrd, Artistic Director and Founder. "Fresh Art has always aimed to be an inspiring and informative resource for individuals, communities and schools. The Student Edition is the exciting culmination of this. I'm honored to provide a platform for students to share their stories."

In 2019, The Student Edition began with visits to select campuses across the United States and Canada. The Student Edition launches with episodes from three of these visits, released within the span of a school week. Original writing by students accompanies the series -responding to and expanding on the recorded conversations. The three inaugural episodes feature a range of learning opportunities-from studio to art history, from social practice to arts journalism, and investigates how students organize to support and encourage each other in their work.

The Student Edition launched on March 2, with new episodes released on March 2, 4 and 6. In September 2020, the second iteration of the edition will feature voices from a fresh set of schools and projects.

EPISODE 1
School of the Art Institute of Chicago, Imagining Tomorrow

At The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, also known as SAIC, Fresh Art meets with participants in the Imagining Tomorrow study abroad program. The yearly experiential learning opportunity brings together students from schools in the Netherlands, Germany, the United States and Pakistan. During each two-week seminar, they gather in a different host community to envision possible futures through design thinking. Their clients are local organizations who ask the students to imagine solutions to real-life challenges. This episode features the voices of students Summer, Alejandro and Faviola and Prof. Kirsten Leenaars.

EPISODE 2
Wayne State University, Designing for Urban Mobility

Travelling to Motor City, Fresh Art meets with students in the course, Design for Urban Mobility. Once a symbol of the dynamic U.S. economy, Detroit, Michigan, has gone through a major economic and demographic decline since the 1960s. The drastic drop in population created acres of emptiness-vacant lots, abandoned buildings and food deserts. Education is evolving in response to challenging living conditions in the city. At Wayne State University the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History curriculum is increasingly geared toward next gen art, design and industry. Students taking the course Design for Urban Mobility work with local entrepreneurs to solve design problems. Past clients have been Detroit Bikes and the Detroit Department of Transportation with the Rehab Institute of Michigan. In fall 2019, juniors and seniors majoring in Industrial Design join forces with Deeply Rooted Produce. This episode features the voices of students Mahmud, Benjamin, Nick, Julia and Marcella and Senior Lecturer Siobhan Gregory.

EPISODE 3
Ontario College of Art and Design University, Curating in the Digital Realm

In Toronto, Fresh Art talks with a group of graduate students at the Ontario College of Art and Design University, also known as OCAD University. For the Intro to Curatorial Practices course, their goal is to research, develop and activate a curatorial platform in the digital realm. In the first weeks of the semester, Fresh Art recorded a conversation with students who are defining their roles and designing their strategy for an online exhibition about intimacy on the web. This episode features the voices of students Alex, Cassandra, Delilah, Jacquie, Jenna, Marilyn, Pricilla, Rebecca, Sam and Prof. Andrea Fatona.
