CFPCA alumni, faculty among 2021's Kresge Artist Fellows and Gilda Award recipients

The 2021 Kresge Artist Fellowships and Gilda Awards in literary and visual arts were announced by Kresge Arts in Detroit July 1. The College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts would like to congratulate the outstanding artists who were named this year's Kresge Artist Fellows.

A Kresge Eminent Artist is recognized annually for a distinguished record of high quality work and professional achievement in the arts, and a lifetime of contributions to their art forms and to the cultural community of metro Detroit. This year's awardee is Shirley Woodson.

Literary fellows include:

  • Emell Derra Adolphus, 2013 alumnus of the Department of Communication
  • Danielle Aubert, associate professor of graphic design in the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History
  • Ann Eskridge, former Department of Communications faculty member
  • Gilda Award recipient:

  • Donnevan Tolbert, 2017 alumnus of the Maggie Allesee Department of Theatre and Dance
  • Kresge Artist Fellows receive $25,000, along with a year of professional practice support. The Fellows will also be included in Kresge Arts in Detroit's ongoing commissioned film series. Brief artist videos are available online at kresgeartsindetroitpresents.com and Vimeo. The 2021 fellows' films will go online next spring.

Last year, in recognition of the impact of COVID-19 on the arts community, Kresge expanded funding to support two additional Kresge Artist Fellows, for a total of 20 annual fellowships, and an additional eight Gilda Awards, for a total of 10.

An online celebration of the 2021 award recipients is scheduled for the evening of July 15. Carole Harris, a 1966 alumna, 2015 Kresge Artist Fellow and 2019 award panelist, will also be part of the virtual celebration.
