Associate Professor Lauren Kalman named a 2019 Museum of Arts and Design Burke Prize finalist

Lauren Kalman, an associate professor at the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History, was recently named a finalist for the 2019 Museum of Arts and Design Burke Prize.

Named after Marian and Russell Burke, two passionate collectors of craft and longtime supporters of MAD (Museum of Arts and Design), the Burke Prize is an unrestricted award of $50,000. The winner will be announced on November 4 at MAD Ball, the Museum's annual benefit gala and dinner.

Kalman's work will be part of the finalist exhibition at the Museum of Art and Design opening on October 3, 2019.

The exhibition is of works from the 2019 finalists for the Museum's Burke Prize, awarded to a contemporary artist under the age of 45 working in glass, fiber, clay, metal and/or wood. Selected by a jury of professionals in the fields of art, craft, and design, the finalists represent emerging voices expanding the disciplines at the core of American studio craft movement whose highly accomplished work demonstrates a strong use of materials, innovative processes, and conceptual rigor and relevance.
