Seeing is Understanding - Visualizing Ideas: The Interaction Between Science, Art and Design
How can art and design provide insight for understanding scientific concepts and their application in everyday life? How can science help present ideas in art and design? What new ideas are possible when artists, designers, scientists, engineers and mathematicians collaborate? This symposium explores these questions through lectures and hands-on workshop sessions.
On Tuesday, Sept. 4, please join us for Crocheting a Coral Reef: A Nexus of Art, Science, Mathematics and Climate Change, where we will examine how connections across multiple colleges and disciplines can be used to create knowledge to inspire and motivate adults as well as future scientists, artists and designers.
Margaret Wertheim, an internationally known science writer and co-creator of the Crochet Coral Reef, will deliver a keynote speech on how her work bridges science, art and design. Join us for a reception in the Community Arts Building from 5 to 6 p.m,. followed by the presentation from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in the Community Arts Auditorium.
Join us again on Friday, Sept. 7, for All the Time in the World, featuring keynote speaker Rachel Sussman, a contemporary artist who traveled the world to photograph continuously living organisms that are 2,000 years or older for her compilation, The Oldest Living Things in the World. A reception will be held in the Community Arts Building from 3 to 4 p.m. followed by the presentation from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the Community Arts Auditorium.
