Men's Swimming and Diving Equals School Record With 19 Academic All-GLIAC Honorees

Warriors have 11 swimmers/divers earn Excellence Team recognition.

DETROIT -- The Wayne State University men's swimming and diving program equaled the program record with 19 Academic All-GLIAC honorees, which led the GLIAC. In addition, the Warriors tied the previous school record of 11 All-Academic Excellence recipients set during the 2019-20 academic year.

Named to the GLIAC All-Academic Excellence Team for maintaining a cumulative grade-point average of at least 3.5 were graduate student Hussain Alzaid (Kuwait City, Kuwait), senior Tanner Robertson (Carmel, Ind. / Lake Orion, Mich.), redshirt junior Franz Mueller (Brandenburg, Germany), juniors Noah Barstad (Allen Park, Mich.), Sam Krahn (Dexter, Mich.), Kyle Lovas (Shepherd, Mich. / Alma), Stewart Nowinski (Macomb, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North), Reid Schoenherr (Macomb, Mich. / L'Anse Creuse North), Chris Spencer (Jackson, Mich. / Lumen Christi Catholic) and Chris Westgate (Rochester Hills, Mich. / Rochester Adams), along with sophomore Luka Cvetko (Varazdin, Croatia).

Mueller (Mechanical Engineering) earned his third Academic award and second consecutive year on the Excellence Team. Barstad (Kinesiology), Krahn (Journalism), Lovas (Political Science), Nowinski (Nutrition and Food Science), Spencer (Biomedical Engineering Honors) and Westgate (Management) earned All-Academic Excellence honors for the second straight season. Alzaid (MBA) was honored for the first time after being a graduate transfer in January of 2020. Robertson (Secondary Education) advanced to the All-Academic Excellence Team this year after two years on the All-Academic Team, while Schoenherr (Kinesiology) advanced to the Excellence Team after one year on the Academic Team. Cvetko (Computer Science) is a recipient in his first year of eligibility.

Wayne State had eight representatives on the All-Academic Team for having a cumulative GPA between 3.0 and 3.49. This group consisted of seniors Tristan Fraley (St. Clair, Mich.) and Jack Rogers (Kalamazoo, Mich. / Portage Central), juniors Grant Porter (Haslett, Mich.), and Derek Wilson (Marysville, Mich.), along with sophomores Andrew Ceely (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Skyline), Casey Dolen (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Dexter), Josh Mahaney (Saline, Mich.) and Matt Vassilakos (Clarkston, Mich.).

Fraley (Accounting),and Rogers (Accounting) garnered their third straight GLIAC All-Academic recognition, while Porter (Biochemistry & Chemical Biology) and Wilson (Marketing) received their second consecutive Academic All-GLIAC award. Ceely (Political Science), Dolen (Environmental Science), Mahaney (Radiologic Technology) and Vassilakos (Mechanical Engineering) were recipients in their first season eligible.

Wayne State shattered the previous mark of 206 Academic All-GLIAC honorees set in 2019-20 with 253 for the 2020-21 academic year. WSU has produced 1,694 Academic All-GLIAC recipients over the last decade.
