DEADLINE APPROACHING: WSU Sesquicentennial Commemorative Visual Art Student Competition

The deadline for receiving proposals for the WSU Sesquicentennial Commemorative Visual Art Student Competition is Saturday, July 15, 2017.

WSU will be celebrating its 150-year anniversary. As part of the Sesquicentennial celebration, the University will sponsor a competition for Wayne State students to create commemorative works of art or design!

The selected piece should highlight the creative thinking, innovation and values that are the hallmarks of Wayne State University. The art or design may represent or be inspired by the history of the University, culture, community, values, traditions, programs, people and/or location.

Examples of possible proposals include:

  • A limited edition print with imagery and text related to the history of Wayne State University
  • A graphic representation of a timeline of significant events in the history of our University
  • A limited edition small sculpture or a larger-scale single sculpture
  • A limited edition photographic work or series
  • A creative piece that marks and celebrates this distinct occasion
  • The proposal process will consist of two phases.

    Phase One

Each student will present her or his proposal with a drawing or image that illustrates the work of art/design, a narrative explanation not more than 500 words in length that conveys the concept of the piece and a resume that details the student's experience and qualifications. The proposal may also include images of three past works that demonstrate the student's capabilities. Deadline for receiving proposals is Saturday, July 15, 2017.

    Phase Two

A group of semi-finalists selected from all proposals will be given a budget amount, intermediate and final production deadlines, and feedback from the selection committee. The semi-finalists will then be invited to create a full proposal taking into consideration these elements. Further criteria for creating the full proposal will be provided to the selected semi-finalists. Each of the semi-finalists will receive a $500 scholarship. Selection of semifinalists will be made by August 2017.

The selection committee will then choose from the semi-finalists one student to create the selected commemorative piece. Selection of the final awardee will be made October 2017. The student will be awarded a budget and a $2000 scholarship. The selection committee will consist of the Dean of the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts, Chair of the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History, a member of the Sesquicentennial Committee, Director of the University Art Collection (UAC) and a member of the UAC. The final work will be property of Wayne State University and may become part of the UAC.

The final project is expected to be completed by August of 2018.
