DIA Plaza Student Design Competition

A Student Design Competition is being organized in tandem with the Detroit Institute of Arts (DIA) Plaza Competition, with Wayne State University co-sponsoring the effort along with other universities in the region. It is part of a larger community engagement process spearheaded by Midtown, Inc. Click here for more information.

As participants in DIA's neighborhood, students may have ideas about how DIA might better connect to the various communities that make up the metro area, and how the DIA Plaza could foster this connection. All ideas that respond to these questions are welcome! No design background is necessary to participate in this competition.

What is the role of the art museum and cultural district in the 21st century? How do cultural institutions establish or reflect civic values? What tactics, tools, or designs can be developed to help these institutions better serve the communities around them? And where does public space fit into the mix?

Students are encouraged to form teams consisting of members from diverse majors and colleges. After they review the website, students who wish to participate and find others to form a team should click here.
