Department of Music Orchestra named finalists at American Prize

The Wayne State University Department of Music’s University Symphony Orchestra, directed by Kypros Markou, was named a finalist at the American Prize National Nonprofit Competitions in the Performing Arts.

Founder and chief judge David Katz recently announced the orchestra finalists for the 2021 competition. The selection was based on videos of recent performances. Other college orchestras that made the finals include University of Washington, Seattle; Baylor University, Texas; and Lawrence University, Appleton, Wisconsin. 

The American Prize is a series of new nonprofit national competitions in the performing arts providing cash awards; professional adjudication; and regional, national and international recognition for the best recorded performances by ensembles and individuals each year in the United States at the professional, college/university, church, community and secondary school levels.

The American Prize was founded in 2009 and is awarded annually. Competitions are open to all U.S. citizens, whether living in this country or abroad, as well as to others currently living, working and/or studying in the United States of America, its protectorates and territories.
