Department of Communication Chair Announcement

POSITION: The College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts of Wayne State University seeks a qualified candidate for appointment as Chair of the Department of Communication. Responsibilities include leadership of the faculty in developing, maintaining, and enhancing undergraduate and graduate curricula; implementation of departmental budget, personnel, and fund-raising policies and goals; participation in faculty, student, and community affairs; teaching in the area of expertise as appropriate; continued personal scholarly and professional activity; leading departmental efforts in recruitment and retention of faculty and students; and leadership in enhancing faculty productivity, creativity, and research. Rank and salary will be competitive and dependent on the experience and qualifications of the successful candidate.

QUALIFICATIONS: The college seeks candidates who possess the following required qualifications: A doctoral degree with extensive experience in one or more of the program areas in the department; a significant publication record and/or record of other appropriate creative activity; and teaching and professional activity to warrant appointment to a tenured rank. Preferred qualifications include extensive experience administering academic and professional programs in the context of a research institution and experience and qualifications sufficient for appointment as professor with tenure.

DEPARTMENT OF COMMUNICATION: The department offers programs leading to the BA, MA, and PhD in Communication with majors in communication studies, media arts and studies, film, journalism and public relations. The faculty comprises 27 full-time and 40 part-time faculty who serve a student body of approximately 600 undergraduates and 160 graduates. The department's facilities include specialized student computer labs, oral communication labs, broadcast-quality video studios, and digital video editing suites. Students in the department participate in professional internships with nationally affiliated broadcast media, including national NPR affiliates, advertising and public relations firms, and major daily newspapers. In addition, Wayne State's nationally ranked and recognized Forensics Program and nationally accredited Public Relations Program are housed in the department. The department also supports the student radio station WAYN and the award winning student newspaper, The South End.

THE COLLEGE AND UNIVERSITY: The Department of Communication is one of four departments in the College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts; the other constituent units are the departments of Art and Art History, Theatre and Dance, and Music. The college's faculty offer degrees ranging from the BA and various undergraduate professional degrees through MA, MMus, and MFA degrees. Wayne State University is a research extensive, urban institution enrolling more than 28,000 students in 350 undergraduate and graduate programs offered through the University's 13 schools and colleges. The campus is located in Detroit's Midtown Cultural Center, and recent construction on the campus includes new undergraduate dormitories, a newly renovated Student Center, and iBio research facility. Building plans in include the Mike Illitch School of Business and the Hilberry Gateway Performance Complex.

Wayne State's neighbors in the Midtown Cultural Center include the Detroit Public Library, Detroit Institute of Arts, Detroit Science Center, Charles Wright Museum of African American History, Detroit Historical Museum, Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and Michigan Opera Theatre. The vibrant Midtown and Downtown areas are also home to active theatres, galleries, professional sports stadiums, and entertainment venues ranging from Second City-Detroit to Detroit Artist Market and the Fox and Fisher Theatres.
