by Shawn D. Lewis

Detroit Public School music students, in dire need of instruments, will begin school in the fall with a crop of violins, clarinets, a drum set and other instruments donated by a college alumni association. The Wayne State University College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts Alumni Association, sponsored a two-day drive that netted 24 instruments for the district. No decision has been made on which schools will get instruments. Joan Smykowski of the Alumni Association was at Wayne State with other board members to accept the donations Wednesday.

"WSU alums collect instruments for budding musicians in DPS"
by Bill Laitner

Leaders of a group of Wayne State University alumni launched a drive this week to collect musical instruments for students in the Detroit Public Schools. They kicked off the drive Tuesday with a collection of 19 instruments in Farmington Hills, and today they will resume noon-4:30 p.m. at the WSU Welcome Center. "We hope to get a lot of instruments from people who work in Midtown or in downtown Detroit," said Joan Smykowski of Livonia, a board member of the alumni association of WSU's College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts. The drive, called Playing it Forward, needs gently used instruments that are in working condition.
